Work Permit Sweden
Requirements, risks, and what you need to apply successfully.
Who needs a Swedish work permit?
If you are a non-EU/EEA citizen planning to work in Sweden, you generally need an employer-sponsored work permit before you can legally start working. The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) processes all applications.
Key requirements
- A valid job offer from a Swedish employer
- Terms of employment that meet Swedish collective agreement standards
- A monthly salary of at least SEK 13,000 before tax (as of 2024, but check current thresholds)
- The employer must have advertised the position in Sweden and the EU/EEA for at least 10 days
- Health insurance, life insurance, occupational injury insurance, and occupational pension must be offered
- The employment must enable self-sufficiency
Common risks and mistakes
Many applications are delayed or denied because of avoidable errors:
- Salary below the threshold — even slightly below can result in rejection
- Missing insurance documentation from the employer
- Incomplete or vague employment contracts
- Employer not registered properly in Sweden
- Part-time positions that do not meet the self-sufficiency requirement
Processing time
Processing times vary but typically range from 1 to 6 months. Cases with complete documentation are processed faster. The Migration Agency offers a certification process for trusted employers that can significantly reduce wait times.

Can I apply for a work permit from inside Sweden?
Generally, you must apply from outside Sweden. However, there are exceptions for certain categories such as asylum seekers or those switching from a student permit.
Can I change employer on a work permit?
During the first two years, your work permit is tied to a specific employer and occupation. After two years, you can change employer within the same occupation. After four years, you may apply for a permanent residence permit.
What happens if my application is rejected?
You can appeal the decision. It is important to understand the reason for rejection and address the specific issues raised by the Migration Agency.
Can my family join me?
Yes. Your spouse/partner and children under 21 can apply for residence permits based on your work permit. They must apply at the same time or after your permit is granted.
